Coming of Age
The song “Coming of Age” by Foster the People is a song that describes what it is like to be tested as you mature.
Well, I see ya standing there like a rabid dog
And you got those crying eyes
Makes me wanna surrender and wrap you in my arms
As you get older you have to take up pain, frustration, and disappointment by yourself. Crying in front of your laptop screen or into your pillow at night. Have you seen a rabid dog? Rabid dogs are described as aggressive, highly excitable, and display evidence of a depraved appetite. Some of these dogs are unable to eat, drink, or sleep properly. Sometimes you’re the rabid dog and you’re looking at yourself with no empathy. You realize that maturing means surrendering to being weak in your own comfort. At the end of the day the way you improve, grow, and learn is through yourself.
I seem to hurt the people that I care the most
Just like an animal I protect my pride
When I’m too bruised to fight
And even when I’m wrong I tend to think I’m right
Do you ever realize in the stages of maturing how much unlearning you have to do? Animals often protect themselves out of a need to survive. Don’t let yourself protect your pride in an animalistic manner. You get nowhere thinking that your way is always the right way. There is a life beyond yours. A world outside your sight. Maturing is a process which you don’t have to hurt yourself over things that you simply need time to understand.
